Conservation Hotspots

Lehigh Hanson is proposing to develop a new limestone quarry at Davie Bay on Texada Island. The new quarry would be the fifth on Texada, where three other quarries are currently operating below capacity and a fourth is closed. Production is stated to be 240,000 tonnes per year - 10,000 tonnes under the threshold for an environmental assessment. Opponents are concerned about industrializing a site which should be designated park, and protecting a karst cave network.
