Beaver River Valley Hydro Project

Synopsis

Selkirk Power has an EPA with BC Hydro for power projects on Ventego and Cupola Creeks (25 & 19 MW), which flow via Beaver River into the Columbia River northwest of Golden, BC. A third stream, Alder Ck, is not included in the EPA. Among the concerns: Ventego Ck is unimpacted by humans - no roads, logging, mining; no baseline scientific data; "compensation" for habitat destruction on Cupola Ck includes a transfer of cutthroat trout from Cupola to Ventego.

Selkirk Power has other power projects as well, though Ventego and Cupola Creeks are the most advanced and the only two with EPAs. BC Hydro intends to start construction in 2011 on the 230 kV Columbia Valley Transmission project, which will increase transmission capacity between Golden and Invermere, and facilitate power projects in the region.
